        CHAIR'S CHALLENGES

            Chair's Annual Challenge

Each year, in the Autumn, the current chair sets a challenge to be completed and brought to the AGM , which is held every year in October.

CHAIR'S CHALLENGE 2024/25

Our Chair is asking for a piece of work, no larger than A4 in size, in any stitch technique, inspired by the poem 'Cargoes' by John Masefield.   The two categories are: 'Hand Embroidery' and 'Machine Embroidery'. If your entry contains both, you need to decide which category you wish to enter. Entries will be displayed at the AGM in September 2025 and members will vote.

The challenge this year is entitled "Cargoes' and should be inspired by the poem of that name by John Masefield.

                    'Cargoes'

Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir,

Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine,

With a cargo of ivory, And apes and peacocks,

Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine.

Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,

Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores,

With a cargo of diamonds, Emeralds, amethysts,

Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores.

Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,

Butting through the Channel in the mad March days,

With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road-rails, pig-lead,

Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.

                            John Masefield
